how long should i let the countertop guys have to finish a job
We hired them Dec 3.They put it in Dec 2223, with out all the right
materials and it was completly screwed up.They came in to redo it Feb 1,
still did not have all the stuff to finish. Now the counters are in but the
backsplash is not. They were supposed to show up Feb 6 but cancelled (sick)
How much longer do l have to give them to finish or can l just fire them
and have someone else finish it.l paid 50% upfront and have not paid the
balance.l think they have been paid enough for what they have done and how long it has taken them. If we do not pay them, do they have a legal reason to put a lien on the house?l have pictures and a calendar documenting all their excuses.
You ve waited long enough.. There is NO excuse for having to
wait this long.. I d call & or send a certified letter that they have till
Feb.. ( you choose day) or you ll either hire someone to finish or you ll
see them in court . Counter top is a 1 day job & 2 if there is a legit
problem In todays economy they don t need to be this long with things
this slow.. Add the BBB to the list too. Along w/ a call to the local
builders assoc. if you have one.. Guys like this give us legit contractors a black eye & po s me off. GL
What does ur contract that you signed specify as to the time
they have to complete the job? It should have a completion date on it.
If not, I would notify them in writing that they have 10 days to complete
the job to earn their money. If it is not done in that time, no pay. You
might also tell them that you are going to penalize them so much per day
after Jan 1st.
Contact 3 other people in ur area who install countertops & ask how long the normal job should take. I am having trouble believing the ''we don't have the right stuff'' story. Installing a counter top should not have been that hard to do for somebody who does it all the time. Take pictures & document all ur conversations to date. Go ahead & file in small claims court to get ur other money returned since the partial job is no better than no job at all. Good luck.
To survive this mistake you might consider trying to get them
to finish the job. this happens all the time with this profession. Dont
turn on them! Even if you are frustrated, as a professional I have learned
to create incentives. Speak to the person in charge, make sure it is the
person in charge of ur job. Make sure they speak english, . Then let
them know that you must have this job done by the end of the month & that
ur funds to do so will be withdrawn after that date, but until then you have their (State Dollar Amount) set aside for them. Speak in clear terms give them a date, & amount & fax them a document in writing to support this.
Its sounds like you hired some dubs, that is way to long and it
should have been done right the first time. Find a contractor with
references and don't pay the other half, take detailed pics of their work
in case it goes to court. good luck.
